Torre del Veguer has started 2018 with outstanding international recognitions. Malvasia de Sitges 2017 from Torre del Veguer winery has been awarded with a bronze medal at the last edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards, which are announced as “the largest and most prestigious wine competiti
on in the world”. It is a prestigious magazine about the lifestyle of wine and wine, which is published monthly in approximately 90 countries around the world. The manager and winemaker of Torre del Veguer, Marta Estany, was very pleased with an award that “internationally rewards our qualitative commitment to the Malvasia de Sitges, a native and scarce grape variety in which we have a lot of hope.” So much so, this family winery has just expanded its own vineyards of Malvasia de Sitges.
2017 vintage is an aromatic shiny yellow pale wine with green reflections. It stands out due to its aromatic intensity, with fruity notes of water peach and tropical fruits, such as lychee, with a background of Mediterranean herbs such as fennel and rosemary. On the mouth, it has a sweetly entrance, it´s fresh and crispy. It also shows persistence and volume, due to aging with lees. After being released last year with a very limited production, this year about 3,000 bottles of the fragrant and round wine have been marketed. This is an ecological wine suitable for vegans, fruit of the Can Parès vineyard, which follows the guidelines of the Catalan Council for Organic Agricultural Production (CCPAE). Torre del Veguer Malvasia de Sitges 2017 is included in the sub-zone Massís del Garraf of the D.O. Penedès.
The jury of the Decanter World Wine Awards is made up of many of the leading experts in its field around the world, including some Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers. Tastings are organized by categories, initially based in the region. The judges tasted each wine individually, having knowledge of the region, the style and the price range, although they do not know the producer and the brand. Later they compare notes and reach a consensus on the medal given to each wine. The medal categories correspond to the 100point system used by Decanter and many leading wine critics worldwide. In this contest, the wines are organized for tastings according to country, region, colour, grapes, style, vintage and price, in order to allow their appreciation for groups along with other wines of similar characteristics.
